what we do

Fresh Food. Community - Led. Lasting Impact

In Nova Scotia, too many families struggle to access fresh, healthy, and affordable food. The Mobile Food Market brings community-led markets directly to the neighborhoods that need them most, putting choice, dignity, and local leadership at the center of every market. We don’t just provide food — we build stronger communities, empower residents, and create lasting solutions to food insecurity.

By creating opportunities for communities to access affordable, healthy food in a dignified way, we help reduce food insecurity across HRM. We are not a grocery store, and we are not a food bank—we fill the important middle ground, offering consistent access to fresh food while helping ease the pressure on emergency food programs. Our approach empowers communities to make their own food choices, promoting independence, health, and resilience.

Our History

Since January 2015, partners and community stakeholders have been working together to tackle food insecurity in Halfax Regional Municipality, where rates remain the highest in Canada. Through extensive community engagement, we connected with local leaders and partners to design Halifax’s first Mobile Food Market, a solution that brings affordable, healthy food directly to communities in need.

The program began as a 21-week pilot, inspired by successful models from other Canadian cities. Over nearly a decade, the Mobile Food Market has grown significantly—navigating challenges such as a global pandemic, rising inflation, and record-high food insecurity—while remaining committed to its mission.

Today, the Mobile Food Market:

  • Operates three community markets each week

  • Maintains a permanent operational space in Dartmouth

  • Partners with over 35 community organizations

  • Serves thousands of families each week

Our focus is on healthy, affordable food delivered with dignity, creating spaces that are welcoming and accessible to all. Through these markets, we aim to reduce food insecurity, build community resilience, and provide hope for families across Halifax and beyond.

“Thank you for coming to North End Dartmouth. I’ve been finding it so hard to work veggies into the meals that I make for my family because of soaring prices at the grocery stores.

This is much needed and greatly appreciated."
