VOLUNTEER ROLES

Mobile Food Market Assistant

Due to the overwhelming success of the initial pilot project, the Mobile Food Market (MFM) is launching a winter pilot that will continue to sell fresh and affordable fruit and vegetables in 6 communities across the Halifax region. Once a week we transform a vehicle into a mobile market that delivers fresh and affordable produce around the Halifax region. The MFM operates in 6 communities; North Preston, East Preston and Spryfield one week and Fairview and North End Halifax the following week. The communities have been chosen based on having limited access to healthy food and also community capacity and interest in supporting the market at a local level. The produce is selected based on residents’ preferences, purchased in bulk and sold at costs that are in line with discount grocery operations.

The MFM is looking for a core team of MFM Assistants that will travel with the market (either on a Saturday or Wednesday) and support all aspects of the project. This exciting role provides an opportunity for working on the ground in these communities and providing support behind the scenes in the preparation and and take-down on market days. Responsibilities include assisting in the market set-up and take-down, traveling with the market vehicle to each location, working cooperatively with community volunteers, working the check-out and restocking produce, assisting customers, representing the Mobile Food Market and answering questions about the project, and working to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

One MFM Assistant will travel with the bus at all times and is essential to the success of the project.
